An Turas - The Journey
In 2018 as a photographer, I visited, Skriduklaustur based in East Iceland as an artist in residence.
I was able to pursue my creative quest to “trail the journey of the Irish Monks that left a small isolated pier in Teelin, west Donegal in 745 AD, to travel in a hide-covered boat to Iceland. From that residency I produced a solo exhibition of photographic work entitled
“The Outer Edge”.
Here I have used film to tell the beginning of that journey of the monks leaving Teelin pier in West Donegal. I wished to demonstrate this as if I were walking in their footsteps, filming up at Rinn na Gille monastery ruins, down the Pilgrims path, Slieve Liag to their departure into unknown seas in a curragh at Teelin, Donegal.
In my film I wished to create the sense of desolation, of bleakness and demonstrate the courages of those Monks who became the first settlers of Iceland at the beginning of the Journey they embarked on.
This short film is a continuation of a body of work from my Iceland trip.
